Is there any value in reading Nietzsche if you read the people who Nietzsche influenced?
Nietzsche must be read on his own terms because no other writer/philosopher is like him, and because all of his followers seem to get something wrong in their reading of him. Heidegger and Sartre are truly footnotes to Nietzsche. The only truly original philosopher to come after Nietsche was Ludwig Wittgenstein. If you can read only 1 book by Nietsche, it should be The Birth of Tragedy. He was at his most lucid when he wrote this. If you want to read a faithful interpreter of Nietzche, read Stanley Cavell's essay "Nietszche and Wittgenstein" in his book "Themes Out of School." It is well worth it.
