How to prevent toes hanging over shoes?

Hello All, I wear a size 8.5 in shoes, so when I buy my heels I will buy them in an 8.5, but my toes will be hanging over my shoes and I can't stand it. I think it is distasteful and not cute at all, so my question is how to prevent this. Do I buy a half size bigger????? I would assume so but as much as I hate to say it Im not a shoe expert. Any advice will help. Thanks in advance.
